Iyengar with flow - IYENGAR FLOW offers the advantage
of merging 2 distinct styles of practicing the poses. Yoga styles
such as Ashtanga emphasize continuous movement, while others,
like Iyengar emphasize stillness and detail in the pose. I love
both the sensation of flowing in the poses and deepening our experience
of the pose through stillness. To achieve both, I link the poses
together in short sequences for a flow feeling and within that
sequence, I hold each pose to allow for stillness.
Asana variety, pranayama, and meditation - Emphasizes
the joy of practicing a variety of asanas (poses), including inversions,
and offers the benefits of pranayama (breathing exercises) and
meditation in all levels of classes.
Simplicity of fundamental alignments - While alignment
in the poses is the foundation of IYENGAR FLOW, I make the distinction
between fundamentals and refinements. Fundamental alignments are
essential for a healthy pose. Once the fundamentals are in place,
I focus more on the breath, overall sensations, movement, and
refinements.
Power with sensitivity - Ingrained in Western culture
there is a deep belief that power is strong and sensitivity is
weak. Mirroring our culture, yoga has evolved in a way that is
dominated by the power aspect. Sensitivity, the underdeveloped
part of our culture, while softer, opens your experience to the
magic of the present moment. IYENGAR FLOW encompasses both. You
experience power by challenging your strength, flexibility, and
balance and develop sensitivity through graceful movement and
gentle attention to the breath.
Seriousness with fun - It's easy to take yourself too
seriously "I must do the pose right, I must improve, I must enter
a sanctuary to have a spiritual experience in yoga." I approach
yoga with seriousness, but add other important aspects of yoga
-- lightness, opening to the moment, and joy. In IYENGAR FLOW
fun is just as important as reverence.
